This year’s 2nd winter getaway takes us back to the Caribbean to the colorful, tropical island of Puerto Rico! Puerto Rico is a volcanic island, and part of the Greater Antilles located in the north-central Caribbean between the Virgin Islands and the Dominican Republic.

The main island of Puerto Rico is only approximately 100 miles long by 35 miles wide, and offers diverse terrestrial and marine ecosystems including coastal mangrove forests, seagrass beds, coral reefs, tropical rain forests, tropical dry forests, and coastal plains!

For our trip we have chosen to escape the bustling, eastern side of Puerto Rico and head to the quieter ‘wild western’ coastal region. The super laid-back surf village of Rincón will be our home away from home!

Rincón is referred to as Pueblo del Surfing (the surfing town) and El Pueblo de lost Bellos Atardeceres (the town of beautiful sunsets)! Not to worry, you do not have to be a surfer to enjoy all that it has to offer!

Rincón is considered a natural and authentic seaside paradise, where emerald hills meet intimate, golden beaches. Rincón is located on a point of land which jets west to a point and meets the Caribbean and Atlantic Oceans, and offers several distinct and intimate beaches. Each day you get to choose the beach which fits your preferred water activities!

One of the coolest qualities of Rincón is that the separation between tourists and locals is more seamless than other resort-type towns. Aside from Rincon’s beautiful beaches, the best part will be socializing with the warm, open, friendly and fun locals!

In fact the locals will be tour guides, showing us the best spots to find relaxation, fun, food, or tropical beverages with fantastic views! We will have a great time utilizing the local entrepreneurs to enrich our trip and experiences!

Rincón became known as one of the world’s top surfing destination in 1968 when the World Surfing Championship was held at Rincon’s own Domes and Maria’s beaches. Generally regarded as one of the best surf spots across the globe, Rincón draws surfers from around the world and is the center of the island’s surf scene. Dubbed the “Caribbean’s Hawaii, or the Hawaii of the Atlantic ” winter waves here can approach 25–30 feet (6.7m) in height, sometimes equaling the force of the surf on Oahu’s north shore!

Rincón is also emerging as a Yoga retreat destination as it offers Yogi-tourists the opportunity to practice on the beach and at open-air studios. Yogi’s can even opt to challenge their practice by participating in group classes on the water with SUP yoga, in the air with Aerial yoga or combine a class with a hike in the hills.

During our trip to Rincón we have planned just enough activities and adventures with a good amount of free time for relaxing or exploring on your own. March is the perfect time to escape winter… and no better place to break free from hibernation than Rincón, Puerto Rico! Whether you prefer calm waters for swimming or waters with awesome surf breaks, Rincón has it all! And, should you tire of beaches you can hop in a car and be up in tropical mountains within minutes! In Rincón you get to choose your own adventure, eat and drink in laid back Caribbean places, and even explore a quaint 240 year old town!

During our trip to Rincon we will be staying in one of the best private villas with ample space for 12 people AND right on beautiful Sandy beach!

Whether lounging on hammocks beneath the gazebo, or whale watching from the 2100 square foot deck on the bluff, this home is an exquisite get-away. This setting combines Rincon’s world famous surfing beaches, and incredible sunsets overlooking Desecheo Island, nothing like watching the sun set behind a mountain in the sea!

All of this will be ours to enjoy, and as a bonus our villa is even walking distance to several local restaurants and bars!

Each bedroom will be double occupancy, some rooms are great for couples and some rooms are perfect for friends to share with 2-3 beds. Book early for preferred room assignment!

  • 6 bedrooms (4 rooms have two beds, one room has 3 beds and one room has one bed) (all bedrooms have AC)

Of the 45 reviews posted, 44 gave the house a 5-star rating! Sample review from 13 people who stayed in Jan 2015:

“Just got back from an amazing week at Rincon. We were a group of 13 adults – couples and singles – and there was plenty of space for everyone… and then some. We’ve traveled to Rincon many times, and this was by far, the nicest place we’ve stayed. The location can’t be beat – right on Sandy Beach, overlooking the beautiful ocean.

The home is within walking distance to many little shops and restaurants, including Tamboo, Kabanas, Pool Bar, Big Kahuna Beach Bar, Rincon Taco, and more. The outdoor space at the house was the best part – there are so many options for relaxing – whether it’s under the thatched roof gazebo, or poolside, or one of the many decks, with options for both sun and shade.

We found the beds to be very comfy and the linens very nice. The kitchens were well stocked – especially the larger downstairs kitchen, which was where we did most of the cooking. We would definitely recommend this property for anyone looking for a place to stay with a large group in Rincon!”

We highly recommend ® optional insurance.

Here are a few reasons to get trip insurance:

  • Reimbursement for cancellation penalties (which can be 100% of your investment) in the event of an unforeseeable illness, injury or death of you, your travel companion or a family member.
  • Reimbursement for cancellation penalties if you are called for jury duty, your home is damaged due to fire, windstorm, flood or vandalism or military leave cancelled.
  • Health insurance coverage while traveling outside of the U.S. as many health insurance companies limit or do not provide coverage outside of the U.S.
  • Reimbursement for unused portion of your trip if it is interrupted.
  • Medical evacuation/repatriation expenses to an appropriate medical facility or back home in the event of a serious illness or injury while traveling.
  • 24-hour help line for any travel emergency, such as medical, lost tickets, lost passports, and other travel documents.

Even Iceland itself has demonstrated the importance of trip insurance! Immense volcanic ash from the eruption of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull volcano in 2010 halted air travel throughout Europe, resulting in the largest air-traffic shutdown since World War II. The closures caused millions of passengers to be stranded not only in Europe, but also across the world.

In 2014, ongoing magma movement, intense seismic activity and a multitude of small earthquakes beneath the Dyngjujökull glacier near the Bárđarbunga volcano, the country’s second highest mountain at 6,560 feet, resulted in an air travel warning that peaked as an “orange” alert – the second highest on the color code meaning “escalating unrest with increased potential of eruption.”
